Portlaoise Theory Test Centre

Portlaoise Theory Test Centre Address

The location of the test centre for driver theory test candidates is:

Unit 2,
Kea Lew Business Park,
Mountrath Road,
R32 W0DT

Portlaoise is serviced by the N77 & N80 roads, which both have connections to the M7 motorway. Parking options in close proximity to the test centre are unfortunately limited, with most positioned over a ten-minute walk away. There are also no bus services that go directly past the venue. Therefore, please be advised that you’ll either need to undertake a lengthy walk or hire a local taxi in order to access the test centre. We would recommend the below parking facilities:

Market Square

The site is open all day Monday-Sunday, except for Fridays between 8.30 am-3.30 pm, when parking is strictly not allowed. However, the site only charges for parking use at the following times:

  • Monday-Thursday & Saturday: 8.30am-5.30pm
  • Friday: 15.30pm-5.30pm.

Therefore, the car park is free on a Sunday (although, please note that the test centre is closed).

This a maximum stay car park, capped at two hours. Given walking distances and duration of test, this should allow you just enough time to get to the venue, sit the exam, and return. Parking costs €0.5 every 30 minutes.

Please be aware that payment can be made via cash, or alternatively by using the Parking Tag service line. This is contactable on 01-244-9999 by phone call, or texting 53311 and following the on-screen instructions. For reference, the location ID for this site is LB. Please note that disabled spaces are available.

The test centre is just under a ten-minute walk away, heading in a westerly direction. Please walk beyond Market Square roundabout onto Grattan Street, before turning left down Tea Lane, and following it through to its end point. The venue is located in Kew-Lew Business Park, which will be on the right-hand side as you approach from Tea Lane.

Church Street Multi-Storey Car Park

This car park is open 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, and has an ample 350 spaces available. Parking is a little more expensive here than at Market Square, costing €1.80 per hour. However, there are no restrictions in parking time. If spending a little longer in Portlaoise, a 24-hour ticket can be purchased for €20.

All payment types are accepted, whether card, cash, or contactless transaction. Disabled parking is available.

The test venue is approximately a ten-minute walk. Please head down Church Street into the town centre, turning right on Main Street. This road will lead you directly to Market Square. From here, please follow the instructions listed above.

For alternative parking facilities in the local area, please visit the relevant Parkopedia page.

If unable to access the site by foot, then using a private cab is probably the best method of travel. We’ve listed the details of several local cab companies below:

  • J Taxi Services: 48 Mill Court, Borris Little, Portlaoise, County Laois, R32 N795. Contact number: +353 87 242 1876
  • Aros Taxi Services: 28 Triogue Manor, Borris Little, Portlaoise, County Laois, R32 E4H1. Contact number: +353 87 778 9647
  • A1 Laois Taxis: Unit 2 Coliseum Lane, Portlaoise, County Laois. Contact number: +353 57 868 2222

Unfortunately, there are also limited bus routes in close proximity to the testing venue. However, if travelling from outside Portlaoise, there are multiple services that will at least transport you close to the town centre (and therefore facilitate a walkable journey to the theory test site). These are the 726, 73, 858, Dublin Airport-Ballynanty service, and the Limerick Institute of Technology service. The Dublin Airport and Limerick IT routes are identical.

726: This route heads southwest from Dublin. If using this service, please exit the bus at Laoise Shopping Centre. From here, head in a north-westerly direction towards Market Square in the town centre, before following the same instructions articulated earlier. The site is approximately 1.1km from this location, so you should allow for around 15 minutes onwards travel time.

73: This service originates in Athlone, and heads south-eastward before terminating in Waterford. Please alight at Portlaoise Centre stop, which is just off Lyster Square. This bus stop is in the town centre, therefore the route to the venue is as above.

858: Heading northeast from Thurles, this route terminates in Portlaoise. Please be aware that you can either exit this service at the Shopping Centre, or at Portlaoise train station, which is the immediate stop after. If you choose to alight at the station, your onwards walk to the test venue will be marginally quicker. If approaching the centre from the train station, head southwards towards Market Square roundabout, before converging with the other routes on Grattan Street.

Dublin Airport-Ballynanty/Limerick Institute of Technology service(s): This route heads south-west from the Dublin Airport. Please leave this service at Laois Shopping Centre.

If travelling via an internal bus route, please make use of either the Centrepoint or Old Post Office bus stops. The Centrepoint bus stop is located at the other end of Grattan Street, so the journey to the test centre from here follows the same route as those using Market Square Car Park will take. If landing at the Old Post Office, please review the same onwards walking instructions from the train station bus stop (noted in the ‘858’ bus service section), as the Old Post Office is enroute to the test centre from the station. It is located in close proximity to the Market Square roundabout.

Portlaoise train station is located just to the north of the city centre and is around an eleven-minute walk from the test centre. This route has been well-documented in the previous notes. As a useful reference point, please note that Portlaoise is around a one-hour train journey from Dublin.
